Downloadable game review: Crayon Physics Deluxe

Crayon Physics Deluxe by Kloonigames

Rate 4/5

From the world of imagination contained in a box of crayons comes Crayon Physics Deluxe. Draw your way through the different levels. The goal is to get the red ball to connect with the star. Draw anything from boxes, hammers, catapults and more to reach the goal. Collect all the stars and set sail to explore the many other islands.

Colorful, child-like stick drawings on slightly crumpled left-over paper characterize each level. These deceptively simple drawings mask a complex physics system. Gravity, momentum, and weight all play a crucial role in propelling the ball towards the star. The key is to use the crayon to draw helpful devices that direct the red ball in the proper direction. Crayon colors change after each drawing. However, the crayon colors stay in the primary range. The color yellow is limited to the star. The drawings are only as good as your skills with the mouse. Erasing is a very simple click of the left mouse. Levels are not timed and there are unlimited possibilities for solving each puzzle.

The background music is very soft and soothing with a different piece for each level. It is very conducive to the concentration required on some of the more complex levels. The music is taken from the classical realm, far away from the expected children's music.

The physics engineering is the most innovative piece in this game. The deceptively simple-looking problems actually hide thought-provoking puzzles. Figuring out how to draw the devices, so they actually work takes some experimentation. No artist is required to play. Drawings do not have to be perfect to work but they do obey the laws of physics. Gravity is perhaps the biggest force to overcome, when the star rests on a higher level than the ball. Lines used as bridges will fall if not properly anchored. Things heavier on one-side will lean toward that side. The levels can be played until the star is collected. Multiple drawings can be used, if necessary.

The simplistic designs mark the creativity of the game. Simple child-like drawings hold a strong appeal for the younger generations. Parents of children will be surprised by the hidden problem solving skills that will get developed while having fun. However, it is not just for children. Adults will find this an appealing challenge, secretly playing when the kids are asleep.

Crayon Physics Deluxe is a game I will buying. The levels can be replayed numerous of times for hours of fun. I like that I do not have to be an artist to play. The appeal is for all ages making this a family-friendly must have.
