In an organisation, most people are content with their routine jobs. Also, they avoid unnecessary troubles. Only a few have the courage to take the initiative to solve problems. The ability to confront problematic situations enhance their skills greatly.
Problem solvers receive the recognition and appreciation, and thus get promoted, because of the following reasons:
• They find problems, not create them: If you are not responsible for the problem in the first place, then there is no harm to find and highlight the problem. You will only prove that you care for your company. You will be surely recognised as a valuable resource.
• They are generally proactive: Problem solvers never wait to be assigned to a task. It is their inherent attitude to look for opportunities to prove their capability. Often they are successful, and whatever be the degree of success it is well appreciated.
• They take risks: Higher risk usually produces higher returns. The courage to take such risk is often awarded with handsome returns like higher appraisal ratings.
• They are more skillful, rare and wanted: As only few people are willing to take risks, and fewer have the proved capacity to deliver, people known as problem solvers are always in demand within the organisation. This makes them highly popular, and thus suitable for promotions.
• They share experience with their teams: Problem solvers can be good teachers. They can take examples of real life situations and share their experiences with their teams, so that everyone can learn to deal with a similar situation later.
• They serve as role models: No doubt they lead by their examples and other are inspired to follow. If you have such leadership skills they you are sure to be promoted.
• They can analyse failures better: Having solved numerous real problems, they can analyse and find out the reasons of failures easily. This can help to avoid such failures in future.
• They serve as their manager's reserve force: At times when others fail to deliver, it is these prized few who can rescue their manger from embarrassment. This reserve force will surely get more noticed even for simple contributions, thus greatly enhancing their chance to be promoted.
Problem solvers are usually well known within the organisation. If a difficult manger wants to keep such a person for serving his (or her) selfish goals, others (including higher management) will surely notice. Ultimately, promotion will come as company would like such a person to take on more challenging work, and solve problems in a higher role.
