The Museum Of the Cherokee Indian in North Carolina.
The museum opened in 1948 and in 1976 moved to it's present location with the mission of "To perpetuate the history, culture, and stories of the Cherokee people"."The museum is located at the intersection of Highway 441 and
Tsali Boulevard in Cherokee, North Carolina, home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, a federally recognized tribe."The Museum is of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. When the Trail of Tears took the Cherokees they did not take the Cherokees located in North Carolina, so they are known as the Eastern Band as opposed to the Western Band which was relocated.The museum has state of the art computer technology that allows you to learn about the Cherokee Indians from 12,000 years ago to the present. You will go through three periods of time in animation. The first period is the Paleo period, when the great mastodons were killed with spears. The second period is the Archaic and Woodland period where the Indians adapted to society changes and began to learn to build and farm, build villages, etc. The third period is the Mississippian Period which echoes who they are now through tradition. It is a place where the story of the Cherokee Indians is told.
The museum contains archieves of four thousand books, one thousand black and white photos, diaries, manuscript materials, nine hundred reels of materials that show documents of forgein archieves and material written in the original Cherokee Syllabary.The museum hold events, the one being upcoming is the third annual Southeastern Tribe Cultural Arts, there will be reenactments and demonstrations of history, the way the tribes lived and made things. It will host more than fifty artists from the "Five Civilized Tribes". They are the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chicksaw and Choctaw.The cost of adult admission is $9.00, children 6-13 are $6.00, 5 and under are free.The hours are 9-5 Monday thru Sunday, from Sept. to May. From June-Aug. the hours are Monday thru Saturday 9-7 and Sunday 9-5.If you have AAA you get a discount, please show your card to receive it.
