Walking is great exercise for people of all ages. It is also a good way to relieve stress, clear your mind and find inner peace. Most of us deal with a moderate amount of stress in our daily lives. Some people are under more stress than others. It is essential for our health and well being that we find a positive outlet to release stress. Walking is one way of doing so.
Walking is an activity that many of us take for granted. We walk every day as we take the children to the bus stop or hurry to work. We walk through the aisles of crowded grocery stores and across busy streets but we don't take time to enjoy the benefits of walking. We are always focused on the destination rather than the walk itself. Walking is one of the most simple forms of stress relief but it should be done in a manner that is conducive to relaxation in order to reap the benefits.
Walk outdoors whenever possible. Some people take daily walks through the mall which is fine if you're walking solely for exercise. Walking through the mall can be good if you enjoy window shopping or feel safe in an active, public place. Walking outdoors in a quiet place is better for stress relief. The fresh air can help clear your mind and focus your thoughts. Allow yourself to become one with nature. Breathe deeply and observe the beauty of nature. Look at the sky, trees, flowers, grass, rocks and all you see as if you are seeing them for the first time. Feel the wind in your hair, the sun on your face or the soft rain bathing your being and washing away the stress.
Choose a time and place to walk that is comfortable for you. For instance, you don't want to go walking late at night in a section of town that is known not to be safe. Of course, that's common sense. You're certainly not going to relieve stress if you're looking over your shoulder. Try to walk in an area that puts you in touch with nature. If you live in a country area that's perfect. The scenery is quiet, beautiful and natural. If not, find an area that suits you. Choose a time and place where you can relax and be carefree. Make sure you set aside enough time for a slow, leisurely walk. You don't want to feel rushed. Walk at a slow natural pace. Feel the stress flowing from your body with each step you take. Make it a practice to walk often and leave the stress behind you when you return home.
