The Debbie Meyer Green Bags: Saving Money or Wasting Time?

With the start of a new year, 2009 will see many people become increasingly health conscious, meaning they will eat healthier, more natural foods instead of the highly processed items we have all become accustomed to. But the fruits and vegetables that our diets call for tend to spoil quickly, often faster than we can eat it. Making the matter worse, the price of groceries is skyrocketing due to the current condition of the economy. This means that we are, literally, throwing money in the garbage when we toss out spoiled food. Finding a way to prolong food freshness would be a blessing. The Debbie Meyer Green Bags aim to fill this money-saving food-preserving need.

The Debbie Meyer Green Bags, offered on infomercials, The Shopping Channel, as well as a few stores, for approximately $25CDN, are said to retain food freshness for greater periods of time due to their unique design. Food, kept in its original packaging, will rot quicker due to the gases that are produced. The Green Bags draw the gases away from the food helping to preserve freshness and colour until they are consumed. But do they really work as advertised?

If sales of these bags are any indication, the answer would be a resounding 'Yes!'. Simply watching the ticker rapidly climb on The Shopping Channel when the bags are a feature item is a direct indicator that consumers are believing all the hype. The bags are flying off the warehouse shelves.

The Debbie Meyer Green Bags come in four different colours: red, green, blue, and yellow. Each colour of bag is used for a different food item: one for cheese, bread, meat, and fruits and vegetables. A very clear set of instructions is provided with the bags explaining how to use them, length of food freshness, and number of times the bags can be reused (up to 10 times each). Once food is purchased, simply remove it from the original packaging, put it in the appropriate colored bag, and store either in the fridge, or on the counter (for bread). The bags are very durable, even the ones that have 'zippers'. The bags can withstand normal family use, even in the not-so-delicate hands of children. The various bag sizes can accommodate adequate amounts of food and do, in fact, prolong freshness as the advertisements claim.

Kim Carrigan, a loyal Shopping Channel customer, purchased a set of the bags in late 2007 and was impressed with the bags' performance, she said. So much so, she has pruchased sets for friends and family.

"I heard many of the women at work had bought the bags to try and loved them so I bought them too. I was instantly sold. I am not tossing my precious fruits and vegetables out nearly as often as I did. I love them!" she said.

One strike against the Debbie Meyer Green Bags is the challenge of cleaning them after each use. As each bag can be used up to 10 times, it is imperative to ensure the bags are properly washed and dried before using them again, sometimes an awkward task. Carrigan says that the cleaning aspect is small in comparison to the benefits the bags offer.

The Debbie Meyer Green Bags are everything they claim to be and have procured a loyal fanbase. They can be an easy and affordable way to keep your produce fresh and keep your money in your pocket while you strive toward your healthier lifestyle in 2009.
