Tips for buying a new mattress

by Bridget N. Watts

When buying a new mattress it is crucial to keep in mind what the most important feature of a mattress is: that it makes you sleep comfortable and that you will feel rested in the morning. Everything else like material, shape and costs should be secondary. Mattresses come in different sizes and various materials that can have a huge impact on your sleeping enjoyment. Never buy a mattress just because it is on sale. The money that you might save is not worth the possible back pains or sleepless nights that the wrong mattress can give you.

Above all things a mattress should be comfortable. Make sure that you try out a mattress in the store before you take it home. Actually lay down on it in several different positions just like you would if you were really going to sleep. Do not let embarrassment prevent you from making sure you are buying a new mattress that is going to make you happy.

Once you get up from the mattress, you should check whether the mattress springs back into shape. You should never buy a mattress that leaves a clear imprint of your body. This does not mean the only good mattress is a hard and firm one. You do not have to feel like you are lying on a hardwood floor in order to protect your back.

Buying a new mattress can be rather expensive, so you might as well buy one that is durable and will last you for the next ten to fifteen years. The most important thing to look out for is the material the mattress is made of. Look at the amount of padding that is used in the mattress. More padding means a softer mattress, but it will also means it leaves a deeper body impression. Besides the padding, it is crucial that you have a look at the coils in the mattress. The thicker the metal used to make the coils, the more durable it will be. Not only the thickness of the metal, but also the number of coils used is important. More is always better.

Finally, you should pay attention to the size of the mattress you are buying. You should make sure that you measure your bed frame beforehand so you do not come home with a new mattress that does not fit on your bed. More importantly, have a look at the thickness of the mattress. The thicker the mattress, the more support it can give, which might be important if you are sharing a mattress with a partner or when you are a heavyset person. If you follow all the above tips and suggestions, you should have no trouble buying a great new mattress.
