Taking your children skiing for the first time: Tips for parents

Taking your kids skiing for the first time can be a terrible or rewarding experience. You want to come away from it with good memories rather than lessons for what not to do in the future. Or broken bones.

First of all, make sure the resort you choose is kid-friendly. Some resorts tend more toward adult experts and offer few options to kids in terms of slopes or things to do. A vacation spent at a family friendly resort is better for everyone and worth the extra research time.

Don't skimp on the equipment. It's not necessary to buy your child skis and ski boots, but remember that cold hands or feet can ruin an entire day. For everyone. And as the axiom goes: you can always take it off, but you can't but it on if you don't have it. Also, in addition to the normal ski outfit and warm clothes, every child should have a helmet and goggles. Don't be afraid to spend the money on these items, they are worth it.

If your kids are old enough, let them take a beginner ski class. Most ski resorts offer these for free on a "bunny slope" with an experienced instructor. These classes are usually available for free or for a low price but, again, don't be afraid to spend the money. Consider it an investment in your child's safety. Also, some experts recommend that you start young children off with small plastic skis in your home before you even hit the slopes to familiarize them with the feeling of wearing skis.

Accompany young kids on the lift. Or at least make sure they know how to use it safely. A ride on the ski lift can be scary for an inexperienced child, especially when it leaves them hanging in the air for a few minutes. Let them know that sometimes the lift has to stop and they shouldn't worry. Be sure they know how to behave properly and how to get on and off the lift.

Take breaks with your kids. This will not only get them out of the cold for a few minutes, but let you stay abreast of what they're doing, whether they're having fun, etc. This is really more of a general parenting thing, but it is important to get out of the cold. These breaks could also be used to reapply that ever-important sunblock. Remember that sunlight reflects off of the snow and can cause sunburn.

if you follow these basic guidelines, you'll hopefully have a great time on your vacation. Happy skiing!
