Defining wealth is something that many people struggle with. Wealth can either mean to be wealthy as in having money or to be wealthy as in having good health. I have been asked many times to determine how a child could contribute to the wealth of a family and I have to say that this is probably one of my favorite subjects to discuss.
Children can contribute to the wealth of a family by doing many things but you must always help your child to set goals and to reach them. If a child wants to contribute to the wealth then they can help by obeying and trying to get along with the other siblings and parents.
If your child doesn't exactly get along with everyone else in the family then you as the parent need to find out why your child is struggling in this area. Contributing to wealth in your family doesn't mean that they must sacrifice everything as a child but some things they can sacrifice such as wanting a new item right away instead of patiently awaiting for you to be able to afford the item. If your child has a give-me-all attitude then you need to have a sit down with them and discuss why some things will just have to wait while others need to be purchased or paid for right away.
On the discussion of health; a child can contribute to helping the family by cleaning up after themselves and by helping out around the house. A parent should be responsible for paying attention to what a child eats while a child should be responsible for helping out around the house. Even a small child can help out by picking up their toys or letting the dogs out when they need to go relieve themselves. Every little helps when a child is trying to contribute to the wealth of their family.
Support should also be given along with praise when a child tries to contribute to the wealth of their family. Praise can be given in the form of telling them how well they are doing or that you appreciate what they are doing to help out around the house. Support for a child will help them to learn how to act and how else that they can contribute to the wealth of their family.
A child should always be guided by a good role model such as their parents or siblings. Some people believe that you can tell a lot about a parent by looking at their children and it would be embarrassing to not have your child to act or behave the way that you wish. If you want your child to help out or to understand why you have to save for a rainy day then you need to discuss these issues with them and help them understand why it is important.
Not every child is going to want to contribute to the wealth of their family but if you set goals and boundaries the chances of them coming around are much higher than those of children who were never taught about responsibilities.
