There is no alternative of telling the truth. It could be bitter, harsh or hurting to self or others, but the wisest way is to tell the truth in a sober manner. From ages it has been said the 'never tell a lie' and it is still holds same as good as it was originally. Law and religion requires us to tell the truth. Truth may cause humiliation or to face the consequences, but it saves others from wrongly being shamed or punished. Children when learn talking they always tell the truth. Later on as they interact with real world, they start learning telling lies and the habit becomes mature at grown up ages.
People lies for many reasons. One may choose to lie or deviate from the plain truths to save from humiliation or punishment, boost own impression, to remain sober in other's eyes, to cover up wrong doings of close ones, to save relationship and on many other similar situations. But does it really helps at the end? No, finally the lies are uncovered the truth takes precedence over the lies. It is more humiliating for the person who was earlier telling lies for whatever reasons it may be.
Truth is straightforward and expressions are natural. It does not take much thinking so long events are in the memory and the person wants to tell it straightforward. But the lie is just opposite. One has to think over and fabricate imaginary things or situation to co-relate and make the lie sound natural. It takes several lies to cover the first lie. Good acting as well as body language need to be maintained to make the lie sound believable. Due to fabrication it may not be said similarly to all. But worst is that in most cases all those efforts are wasted and the truth comes out putting the person in great humiliation for telling lies in the first place and then tries to cover it up.
It is wiser to tell the truth in the first place. Sometime it makes the gravity of offense or wrongdoing much lighter then discovering the actual fact later. If he can explain the reasons for his offense or wrongdoings it helps others to be more supportive to the him for the right causes. Telling the truth causes the person to feel relived and lighter from burden.
In the first place aim should be to avoid situations, which would cause one you to lie or deviate from the truth. If it can not be avoided, the wisest way will be to tell the truth with reasonings. If the situation allows you to remain silent without harming other innocents or causing any losses, then you may prefer this option, but to tell a lie never helps in long term.
