Fired: Turning the negative into a positive

Getting laid off is something most people will have to deal with at some point in their lives. Sometimes it's unexpected and that's when it will hit you the hardest. For the first few days bitterness will take over and you might be thinking about how to get back at your former boss and/or colleagues. Try not to give in to these impulses.

There's a silver lining in every dark cloud. One door will close and another will open. That's the way the world works. But to see that new avenue of opportunity will take a pair of keen eyes and a clear mind.

The first thing to remember is this, maybe it wasn't about you at all. It is probable that whatever company you worked for is about to crash and burn and they had to start laying people off earlier than expected. Don't take it personally. If you are let go, think of it as a chance to pursue something which you really want to do.

If you were working for a large corporation where your efforts might have gone unnoticed, getting the boot might have been a blessing after all. Look for a smaller company, where there will likely be less competition and most of all, less backstabbing among employees. Sure, the money might not be as good, but if that is the case then it might be time to take a closer look at your budget and what you can now afford.

If you have a family then you should jump at the chance to start a home based business. Your spouse and children would love to spend more time with you, and your physical and mental stress would probably begin to disappear. Get yourself a computer and click to your heart's content all day without having to look over your shoulder every time your boss was hanging over you observing every move you made.

Getting fired can be a good thing, if you're dispassionate and bored in your current position. I know what that is like. The moment you step into the office your energy level sinks like a rock in the ocean.

My advice would be to think about taking a trip. Choose someplace exotic, a country where you have never been before. If you've got just a few days left at work before you leave forever take the time to surf the web to book airline tickets and make hotel reservations. So what if your boss sees you doing this? What will he/she do? Fire you?

If my boss didn't like me or vice versa, getting laid off wouldn't bother me one bit.
