Humor: Snowed in

by Leslie Keck

Created on: January 13, 2009

It was the winter of 1985, in Manitoba Canada. I was 8 months pregnant and just married that summer. I had made it through the summer being pregnant, now just to make it through the last month so I can see my feet again.

I had woken up in the morning, pulled open my curtains and seen that it had started snowing. It looked beautiful outside with the street lights still on and the snow flakes floating past them and falling to the ground. I made myself coffee and sat in front of the window to watch the snow fall.

I spent the majority of the day in the house getting some stuff done that needed to get done. The snow had not stopped falling all day, in fact it had started falling more and the snowflakes were huge.

When I woke up the next morning and looked outside, it was unbelievable, the snow had not stopped and it had to be at least 2-3 feet deep. The snow was so deep that there was no way cars could even get down the roads, it looked like a ghost town..no civilization anywhere. The grocery stores, malls etc. where also closed, nobody had a way to get anywhere.

We had turned on the news and they were saying that the police were looking for anybody that would be willing to lend out their ski-doo's so the police had a way to get around the city. They ended up with a few, which kept the crime down to a minimum.

I had started to feel like a caged bird, being in the house for two days now. I was pregnant and had a huge craving for Mc. Donalds, and I was bound to get some. I told my husband of my cravings and he said that they are probably closed, just like everything else. I wouldn't accept that, my baby wanted Mc.Donalds, so I was going to get it for him.

He asked me how we were going to get there, and I told him "by the two feet God gave us." He didn't seem impressed but wanted to make me happy, so we got bundled up and headed out into the knee deep snow. Mc.Donalds was about a 20 minute walk without the snow, so we knew it was going to take awhile.

I couldn't believe I was doing this walk being 8 months pregnant, but when you get a craving, it doesn't go away until you feed it. I'm sure all the woman who have been pregnant know what I'm talking about.

We finally made it to Mc.Donalds only to find out they were closed. I have never been so upset in my life, I figured out of all the places, this is the one place that had to be open, but it wasn't. I dreaded the long walk back home, not satisfying my craving. I was very disappointed, but to look back on it now, I find it humorous that at 8 months pregnant, I would haul my butt in knee deep snow just to settle a craving. Just goes to show you, pregnant woman will do just about anything.
