Good online resources for artists can broaden their horizons no matter what their location. With internet access, artists can study art history, look at contemporary works, learn about grants, or read articles about the business of art.
One good place to view art from the past online are museum websites. Many of them have wonderful programs, tutorials and virtual tours of the museums and galleries. The best, in my opinion are:
www.moma.org; www.sfmoma.org; www.metmuseum.org; www.whitney.org. These are great if you wish to view or read about artists from the past but do not live close to a major museum. They also are rich with links and other resources, too.
Many other art history websites are available for your use. Most do not require registration, but some do. One good one is www.witcombe.sbc.edu./ARTlinks .html This site is rich with artists, and you can stay busy on this site for days. You can get a feel for contemporary art worldwide through this site and there are biographies of contemporary artists all over the world as well as more links for researching them.
Ano online source that has resources such as lists of museums, artists, mini-gallery and endless information is www.artincontext.org. It is under Carnegie-Mellon Unversity. It is a directory of art and artists that is easy to use and navigate. I found it to be very thorogh and easy to use which sometimes is a problem with sites that have a lot of information on them. This site is simple and is based on lists that are active links.
The best resource for working artists is www.nyfa.org. While it is geared for artists living and working in New York state, it has a wonderful collection of articles on all topics relevant to today's artist. Goal setting, the business of art, and staying mentally focused are just a few of the topics that this site covers. This site does require a free registration but it well worth the time and only takes a minute. It includes information on grants that you can use for your own location even if you live in other states.
For artists who are looking for open calls to art shows, competitions or grants, then www.artdeadline.com is a good choice. It has a sizeable listing for free and for a low subscription price, a more extensive list can be accessed. Jobs, opportunities, hints and other resources can be found on artdeadline.com.
All of these sites I have listed each have extensive links to other sites and sources that should get any artist going on their quest for more information, advice, or artists to watch for.
