Making your own broth is easy to do and financially cheaper for you. If you peal potatoes, carrots, onions, or any other vegetables, toss all the pealing into a pot, add salt and pepper, and top with water. Boil for a couple of hours covered on medium heat. Strain and then you will have a very tasty broth for soups, stews or gravies. This is a great way to get your moneys worth out of your grocery bills each week. This broth is easily frozen for future use. If you only need small amounts of broth you can pour broth in ice cube trays and freeze. When frozen transfer to freezer bags for easier storage in your freezer. This first recipe is also wonderful if you are vegetarian as it contain no animal products. Use this broth in place of any recipe calling for water, beautiful flavored vegetable broth.
This broth recipe is made from chicken. Use the bones from the chicken you may have made the day before. Add bones, an onion, celery and carrot to a pot filled with water. add savory, thyme, salt and pepper and boil for approximately three hours. Cool and strain. Pour broth into a freezer bag and freeze for future use in any recipe calling for chicken broth. I use this broth in my chicken stews and gravies. This broth is also a tasty additive for mashed potatoes instead of butter or margarine.
This next broth recipe is for the meat lover. use the pot that you cooked your meat in. Beef, pork, chicken or even lamb works well for this broth. Trim all access meat and fat from the cut of meat you have cooked. Add back to pot with some fresh garlic, onion and celery. You can also season with salt and pepper if desired. Add two litres of water and simmer for a couple of hours. When done, strain and freeze for future uses. This broth is great for soups and gravies. it can also be used bread recipes in place of the water. The bread made with this broth is perfect for dipping into the soup you can make with the same broth mixture.
These homemade broths are simple to make and very tasty. If you do not have time to make the broth the same day as you peal the vegetables, no problem. Toss everything into a freezer bag and freeze in until you find yourself with a day at home. Take the peelings or meat mixture out of the freezer and toss frozen into a pot, Top with water and simmer while you clean the house or do whatever you have planned that day. When you are ready, simply put into freezer bags and freeze in or use it the same day.
These broths are very cost effective and you will always know the ingredients used. A healthy and safe alternative to store made brands. They are delicious and always on hand ready to use. remember, you can use these broth recipes right from frozen to flavor any recipe that calls for broth.
