A smelly fridge is never a good thing. When hunting for food, you want to have a clean and enjoyable experience. This isn't hard to achieve with a few good maintenance tips and a basic cleaning now and then.
General maintenance is the key to a fridge without smells. This doesn't have to be a lot of work. You should keep a box of baking soda without a top (or buy a fancy one made for the refrigerator) and store that in the back of the fridge. If you have a real odor problem (which is more common in older refrigerator models) you can also add a box to the door and any of the drawers.
The next thing is to wipe up spills as soon as they happen. Leaving spills can cause a lot of odor. Meat is an easy way to end up with a nasty stinky smell. When defrosting meat in the fridge it is a good idea to put it on a plate. This will catch any fluids from the meat that might leak from the package.
Keep an eye on left overs and other foods. It is easy to let the leftovers and even the fruits or veggies grow in the fridge. This adds to the possibility of refrigerator odors. By throwing away food a week after it was made it is easy to keep an eye on what is still edible. You can even add post it notes on plastic containers to keep track of the date. Anything in plastic bags can have a date written on it. Toss anything questionable and don't leave it in there for later. It will save on the fridge smells.
Cleaning the fridge can be a fairly easy process. You shouldn't use chemicals in the fridge because of the close contact with food. It just isn't safe and can cause contamination. Even those chemicals now claiming to be safe to come in contact with food should be questioned. Simple household products can replace harsh chemicals for a very safe and easy cleaning experience. In a small bucket or bowl of warm water add 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of lemon juice. Stir it together. This makes a great cleaning solution for your refrigerator. Wipe down shelves, drawers, and other surfaces with the cleaning solution. This will kill bacteria, help clean surfaces, and it will also eliminate odors. Make sure you remember to wipe the shelves in the door (under the condiments) as well. You can also clean the outside of the fridge with this same solution which will leave a pleasant lemony scent.
Cleaning behind and next to the refrigerator is also a good idea. The fridge should roll out, but be careful as you move it forward. Vacuum and mop back here and check the sides of the fridge as
