Details, details
Remembering the details in life can be a crucial part of success when developing one's career. As with anything in life, it is a lot easier to remember something from the past than have to re-learn it all over again. A good memory helps people avoid "re-inventing the wheel." The concept of "re-invention" generally refers to times when people have to redo something from scratch even though they, or someone else, have done it before. This can be frustrating for people, particularly when they know they are engaging in a redundant experience.
Building networks
In addition, memory can be a tremendous asset in the human part of career development, which is commonly referred to as networking. The idea of networking is to build as many contacts and relationships as possible in order to utilize them for contacts, services, and customers. Networking is not a complicated concept, but it does require ongoing maintenance and follow-through. Having a good memory can be a major aid in networking because it minimizes the amount of information that must be re-acquired, which is similar to the concept of re-doing processes, as mentioned about.
Names
Information comes in many forms. For example, how many times in life have people heard someone else utter, "I'm not good with names." This can be a major detriment to the one's career because having to re-learn a name sets the relationship back a step. Granted, it doesn't mean that forgotten names will doom a relationship, but remembering always helps. People like to be remembered because it says something about their importance in someone else's life. In general, most people expect that names will be forgotten. When someone remembers their name, either from the distant past or from a brief meeting, it can make them feel good about themselves and their significance to the other person.
Geography
Some people just seem to have a natural sense of direction when it comes to geography. Sometimes, this isn't just helpful with getting to social events. Being able to work around a neighborhood or a city can be helpful for the career because it can mean remembering where businesses are located or where commerce happens. It can also mean remembering the best ways to get somewhere, which can save time when conducting day-to-day business. When people get lost, they get stressed. This can lead to distractions and less productivity over time.
