Downloadable game review: Crayon Physics Deluxe

Remember the days when you could make simple line drawings with crayons, and no one cared if you were "good" at art? Crayon Physics Deluxe harkens back to those youthful days, with a simple but fun puzzle game.

The goal in each stage of Crayon Physics Deluxe is to make the red ball reach the star. The only way you can manipulate the red ball, however, is to give it a little nudge. The level designs, however, prevent you from just nudging the ball toward the star! What you have to do is use your crayons to draw ramps, hammers, and other objects that will help your little red ball reach its destination.

The controls in Crayon Physics Deluxe are super-easy. Click and hold the left mouse button to draw with your crayon. Use the right mouse button to erase an object. If you want to be pretty about things, you can change the color of your crayon by using the mouse wheel. Mess up? Just press the space bar to reset the level, and voila, you're good to start drawing again. The game also is very helpful in pointing out new ways to solve puzzles when they are required.

In the normal game play mode, your game play is grouped into islands, each of which has several stages. You can complete all the stages, or you can choose to take only one path or the other, if a puzzle is proving to be too difficult. Each island progresses in difficult on a gradual scale, and there are many ways to solve each puzzle: you're only limited by your imagination, and basic physics.

The graphics of Crayon Physics Deluxe are rather simple, for obvious reasons. The playing field is a crumpled piece of brown paper it looks the same way an old paper from your childhood might. And all the graphics outside of the island and boat you take are crayon drawings. And while not impressive for those who like to drool over graphics, the crayon graphics are done well. To match the setting of the game, the music is light hearted and childlike.

There's no doubt that Crayon Physics Deluxe is a fun game. Unfortunately, games of its caliber have been available on the internet, free, for a few years now. The game is certainly fun enough to pay for, especially considering there's a level builder, but consider your options first. Otherwise, enjoy this gem of a game!
