I look into those hungry faces and tears come to my eyes.
The small kids huddling close to their mommies.
Their eyes full of pain and hunger.
Their clothes are torn and tattered, dirt staining every corner.
Their hair is matted with years of dirt and their thin arms look so frail.
The bones protrude out of their shirts like death awaiting.
I am scared to touch them for fear I might break their little bodies.
As they look at all the food that the soup kitchen has offered for them their eyes light up.
Its like Christmas morning to this family.
The look on the parents face are of relief that at least their child is being fed tonight.
I have never known hunger like this family has known nor I hope I will never.

Looking for one morsel,
One piece of bread a day
Was all I had
Sometimes, I would break it in half
Sometimes, I could make it toast
My children's bellies

Guttural longing uncontrolled
Both night and day
Throughout the world
Searching, longing, growing old
Seeking protection
