Short stories: Internet relationships

We met through a Yahoo pen pal group. We live 3,000 miles apart with an ocean between us. Our first emails were short bios of ourselves. We were about the same age, late fifties and married with grown children.

We were each looking for a friend. Someone we could talk to and share our joys and sorrows with. Someone who would listen and not judge. In slightly over a month, we went from strangers to friends to lovers. Lovers as in we fell in love.

We exchanged pictures. As I double clicked on the photo attachment in his e-mail, I scrunched up my eyes and kept telling myself how much I love this man. When I opened my eyes, there was a handsome man in a tux! Not bad, I thought.

He told me I was beautiful from my shining brown hair to my flawless skin, and sparkling eyes. I thought to myself; what picture did I send him? Love really is blind. I'm not bad looking. Other people have told me I'm pretty or even beautiful. But, coming from him it was magical. If he said I was beautiful then I was.

As our love grew, our frustration at the distance that separated us grew too. Having a vivid imagination, I created a place for us in cyberspace.

When I write to him, I go to our place. When I read his emails, I am there. I know that often I read his letters long after he's gone to bed, being in our place I feel connected. I reach out and stroke his cheek. I kiss his cheek. He holds me. We watch movies together. We like love stories with happy endings.

Our cyber-home is simple. We don't need much. A small cottage with a thatched roof, with a small but well kept garden, plenty of open space for the dogs to run, a small lake for a late night dip.

There is one large room that is kitchen, dining room, and living room. The ceiling is beamed and flowers hang from it for the dried bouquets and arrangements we love. There are a few herbs as well. He loves to cook and I love to watch him.

The kitchen/dining area is small but well laid out. We have the best appliances and energy efficient everything. Even the pots and pans are made so they need less heat to cook everything just right. We want to keep cyberspace green. There is a big window above the sink that looks out over the open space so I can keep an eye on the dogs.

French doors lead out from the dining area to a small brick patio. There are no bugs in cyberspace so we leave the doors open most of the time. There is always a soft gentle breeze that has a slight scent of honeysuckle. Odd since we have no honeysuckle in the garden.
