How to improve your memory

by John Gray

Created on: January 11, 2009

The one time world memory champion Dominic O' Brien was able to recall 54 packs of cards in the exact order within just one hour of seeing them. How is this remarkable achievement humanly possible? Surely such achievements are far beyond the grasp of the average person? It seems not, it seems that anybody can reach those feats with the correct application and training.

Dominic was no child prodigy in fact he was a very ordinary schoolboy with no particular talents and with nothing to mark him from anyone else. It wasn't until later in his life that he began to explore the implications of memory for himself. He found that by using images and imagination tied-together used within various memory systems he was able to vastly improve his memory from the ordinary to the extraordinary, what's more Dominic is convinced that anyone can reach his level with the correct training.

Even if you simply want to improve your memory a little, be able to recall the things you have read better or to remember faces or phone numbers better then an application in memory training can help you out vastly. Here are some of the most important aspects and methods for improving your memory from my recent reading and study in this area.

*Review and Recall

By far the most important thing that I have read regarding memory is the system of review and recall. Timing seems vital if you want to maximise what you have learnt from the short-term to the long-term memory. It seems that studies have shown that a five/six point review system is best which is done as follows (differs slightly depending who you read):

Immediately-1 Day-1 Week-1Month-3-Months-6 Months

By reviewing in these time periods, and we are talking about a 5 minute review for each, you should ensure that what you have read/learnt goes into the long-term memory ready for immediate recall.

There is a case to be made I think for the argument that if you can't remember what you have read a year or so after you have read it, then there was little point in reading it in the first place, outside the pleasure it gave at the point of reading. This should especially apply if you have a greater interest in books (and with them ultimate knowledge) than just the passing holiday read. Keep notes of what you have read and follow the review and recall system in order to maximise your knowledge.

*Remembering Quotations

Should you wish to remember quotations for exams or to memorise poetry there is a sure fire way to do so easily and effectively, while
