An alien invasion would no doubt create widespread panic. People would be overcome with fear. Their ultimate goal would be to survive, protect their families and save their planet from the invaders. Many people would likely die while fighting to protect planet earth from the alien invaders. As bad as the whole scenario sounds it is important to remember that everything in existence must balance out.
This world is comprised of opposites and duality. There is positive and negative. Strange as it seems sometimes good can come out of bad. We've looked at the negative aspects of such an invasion which is usually the first thing we do in any situation. We always tend to focus on the worst case scenario in every event. If we could overcome that tendency we could change ourselves and our world for the better. Although a hostile alien invasion would bring disaster it could also force humanity to bond together and finally realize that regardless of sex, race, religion or social status we are all human.
Such an event would force us to stop fighting amongst ourselves and work together. After all, this planet is home to each and every one of us and we all have rights as human beings. Perhaps people would be forced to put aside prejudice and petty differences to unite in a common cause. An alien invasion may force us to take a long, hard look at ourselves and put our priorities in proper perspective.
You may think that it would be too late because many people would die in such a battle. It's never too late to change for the better. It's never too late to bond together and realize our common ties. No one wants bad things too happen and when they do we tend to turn inward to find the answers and rationalize tragedies. Human existence has been filled with tragedy from the very beginnings of recorded history. We've all had our own personal tragedies, hurts and disappointments. But instead of all these experiences bringing us closer together on a global level the wedge between us grows even wider. Will we ever learn to move past petty differences and unite as a species?
It may take such an event as a hostile alien invasion to bring the people of earth together. I've had my share of personal tragedies and I've come to believe that sometimes things happen for a reason. Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned. Sometimes our souls are strengthened and forged in the heat of tragedy. It has often been said that earth must be purged and purified before peace and renewal can take place. One quote that always sticks in my mind is that "Change is the Earth's only constant." Everything in our existence is constantly changing and that includes us. If we refuse to flow with the changes taking place around us nature will nudge us into the river of change. Let us hope that if we ever meet aliens they will be benevolent beings. But we don't need to wait for an alien invasion to start embracing our fellow human beings.

Honestly, asking how a hostile alien invasion would change the world is sort of answering the question itself: the world
