In this world, change is the only constant, and often changes are made for the better.
Well-planned and confident changes can do wonders to one's career. But before one actually starts making these changes, a few crucial questions need to be answered
Evaluation: How do I know whether my career needs a makeover?
Initial Analysis: Do I know the deltas, that is, the negative implications of the changes? How do I minimize or neutralize the deltas?
Decision: Should I ultimately go ahead ?
Planning: When do I start? What should be the course of action, immediately and in future? How do I measure the benefits?
Backup planning: Do I have a backup plan?
Once you get satisfactory answers to the above questions, you can commence the final phase: Implementation (which means to start acting as per the plan).
Let us try to examine each of the questions. While we try to find the answers, each question can lead to more questions, and then we ought to find as many answers as needed to satisfy ourselves. Remember, although we think with our brains, we often decide with our hearts (which can be very effective and it leaves us at peace with ourselves). Therefore, before deciding on the need and course of a makeover, once must me satisfied at heart.
Evaluation: How do I know whether my career needs a makeover?
To carry out an effective makeover, you must believe that it is for the better.
Try to answer the following queries:
What do you want to achieve as an individual and a professional? Is your current career/role is giving you what you want?
Think of the personal and professional goals that you set a few years back, and try to figure out where you stand now. For example, you planned to take a long holiday three years back. Did your job allow that?
Again, you thought that you will get a promotion by 2008. Did you get the promotion? If yes, try to understand the circumstances under which you were promoted. Did you get a raise as someone else retired, or was it a genuine appreciation for your efforts?
Do you feel let down by your boss, more than often? Do you have to nag a lot for small favors?
And finally, are you happy at the end of the day? Are you happy with your wallet, your wardrobe and flat? Are you happy with your family, and are they happy with you? Do you like your colleagues , and do they seem to like you?
And think over, more than once, and be honest with yourself when you are thinking. If you are not happy with your own answers, then surely you must agree, your career
