It should come as no surprise to anyone, that our public school system, much like the federal government that owns them, would be so interested in infecting more of our lives than absolutely necessary with the idea of a sexual identity course in their classrooms. A terrible idea that would only be ushered in on a curriculum created by the wrong people. Contrary to the ideologies of politicians and school board members, there are some things it's citizens and students could and should handle on their own.
First and foremost, most public schools have an established Health class required for graduation. Sometime around 11th grade, to the students unbounding adolescent glee(and the teacher's chagrin), the lesson on sex is taught. A lesson that is fruitless in today's world. Yet the sex lesson goes on to giggles, smirks, cocked heads of disbelief, and groans of 'why me' from teachers. What do the ties and blouses behind the curriculum think they can teach children about sex let alone sexual identity? Children who have cable, the Internet, worldwide networking, peer pressure, raging hormones, and unbridled curiosity are not going to be learning anything new from the twenty five year veteran teacher who has seen his or her best days in the past and is waiting to accumulate enough time for early retirement. Our sex classes currently in place are generally ineffective. More for kids to be able to say 'orgasm' or 'ejaculation' to their teachers and to watch a natural birth from the 1970's, the idea of teaching kids something new about the world of sex is as dated as that birthing VHS tape. Then, asking to inject another concept, especially one so wide open and controversial, like sexual identity is asking for trouble(beside, I do not believe schools use film projectors anymore so the film from the 1950's that they have in a closet somewhere may not be able to be seen).
For the sake of argument let us pretend a sexual identity course will be apart of the fall semester's classes. You have set up a class that seems genuinely well prepared and well taught. The sole objective is to help kids. Now it is Christmas and your son, the senior captain of the football team, figures out he's gay thanks to the help of the sexual identity class being taught at his school? While I am all for people being who they are, gay, straight or otherwise, can you imagine the storm of complaints and venom thrown at the school from parents who's kid's discovery of themselves contradicts what their
