Are you impressed when someone remembers your name when you've only met once? Are you wowed by a colleague who always seems to have all the pertinent facts and figures in his/her brain? Want to be that someone? Improve your memory.
A good memory is secretary to the brain. It organizes, sorts, reminds, and is a positive resource for the brain. Unfortunately, you can't go and hire a memory like you would a secretary. You have to train the one you have and teach it to do a superior job. If yours isn't functioning up to par, insist that it improve its on the job health habits and go back to school for more training.
IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH. Good eating, sleeping, exercise, and elimination of smoking all contribute to better memory. Good nutrition supplies your brain with the vitamins it needs; sleeping rests your entire body including your brain; exercise promotes good circulation which sends oxygen to your brain; and stopping smoking reduces the possibility of vascular disease.
EXERCISE AND TEACH YOUR BRAIN to do a better job by practicing ASSOCIATIONS they can be visual such as imagining a microphone when you see someone named "Mike"; acronyms such as FACE for the treble staff in music; alliteration Silly Sally, Big Bob, etc. You can associate sounds, sights, or smells with certain facts so that all you have to do is think "orange blossoms" and the details come back to you. You can learn detailed processes to rhythm
PRIORITIZE information vital to your job. At the community college where my husband taught, the college president greeted him by "Don" one day, "Greg," another, and even "Rick." My husband corrected him once his name is "Dave" and then didn't bother. He just said "hello" back each morning. Knowing the name of staff and clients from day one is an asset that will serve you well. Cut out a photo directory and paste it where you'll see it often. Write descriptions of key people. If you're working on a case, carry the details of it with you where you can memorize key facts several times a day.
One of the best ways to memorize important things is to make them important to you. We all know of people (usually family members) who don't listen to us when we ask them to remember to get something from the store. Make a promise to yourself to remember. Take a brisk walk before work and at lunch to oxygenate your brain. Practice your recall of important facts on the walk.
