Society should not label anyone as a "Superstar"

by Austin Moore

What exactly is the definition of a "Superstar"? According to dictionary.com, a superstar is "a person, as a performer or athlete, who enjoys wide recognition, is esteemed for exceptional talent, and is eagerly sought after for his or her services".(dictionary.com) A superstar is someone that excels in something, is one of the best at what they do, no matter what it is. These people that are labeled superstars have worked very hard all throughout their life to get to where they are today, despite what you would think.

Some may have the idea that people with the 'superstar' title are automatically treated as gods or the like. This is not the case, in fact, everyday people try everyday to prove that they are indeed just as mortal as the rest of us. Tabloids, magazines, newspapers, all of these contribute to try and bring down the image that is trying to be upheld. We tend to forget that they were just like us at one point; young, foolish, with an ambitious dream and nothing but hard work and perserverence going for them.

But they managed to do what all of us failed to do; They took their dreams, their ambitions, and made them into reality. When everyone else gave up, and decided to waste their lives, to become insignificant, they got back up again, and went at it with a new passion. Do we deserve to not at least give them the right to wear the title of "superstar", and proudly? However, something that has to be considered is the people that are falsly labeled as superstars, and really have no right to claim such a title.

People that use their power, influence, or money to obtain positions of importance do not deserve the title of 'Superstar'. One example would be the children of 'Superstars', who use their parent's abilities and importance to make themselves seem more important. Society should not bother with these people; Instead they should make their own way in the world, proving that they have something astounding to offer it. Otherwise they don't deserve such a title.

So, no, society shouldn't label just anyone as a "Superstar". Only the people that actually try to make their own path, their own destiny truly deserve to be called Superstars. Hiding in the shadow of someone greater than you does not a Superstar make. So if Society wishes to call someone a superstar, I hope they really are worthy of such a title, else they will always just be one faking their own importance.
