The Spirits Within is the worst Final Fantasy anything since Final fantasy mustard sauce, which doesn't exist, so that means it has always been the worst of the FF series.
Each Final Fantasy comes with it's own bit of originality and story, and for a movie i expect no different. i didn't want to see a movie that was based on an already existing FF title, but i would have liked for them to make it as similar to any other FF as each other one has been. But no. Where are the magic spells? Where are the Chocobo's? Where are the fighting skill's like "Jump" and "Steal"? Where are the "Summon's"? Come on guys... these few things are the only connections that make it a Final Fantasy to begin with.
What justifies this being a Final Fantasy? I haven't watched the movie since it came out, and that was many years ago. But if i had watched it i could complain more on the irrelevancies that it has for the FF series.
As for any other viewer that isn't already pulled into the FF series, I'm glad no one really got it or liked it. If that would be what pulled someone into the Final Fantasy series, they never would've liked what REAL FF is about.
Anyway, the movie wasn't well written to begin with. You don't grab a handful of video game movie scene writers and ask them to do a full length movie. The movie scenes in video games suck far too much to be a movie for themselves. In FF the Spirits Within the voice characters do not fit the voices, and it doesn't really appear that they are even saying the words that you hear. The graphics were great, and phenomenal for their time, but that isn't what makes a good Final Fantasy, let alone a good movie.
It does have an interesting plot, but it could have used some better writers to really pull you in and make you care about the characters. Anyway, the graphics may have been TOO good. They made the people appear to be so realistic, it makes me wonder why they didn't just use real actors. I mean, i could understand if they used CG so they could do some cool special effects or magic spells, but they didn't really seem to take advantage of the medium that they had laid before them.
To me it seems that the movie was as similar to a Final Fantasy as Mario is. It appears that the creators of the movie only used the Final Fantasy title to sell it to the people. They probably figured that if it had a familiar title, it had a built in audience, and thus it would pull in money.
You can watch a mediocre sci-fi movie on the sci-fi channell. It's fine. If you don't go into a movie expecting too much from it, then you don't have far too fall if you are dissapointed. It may not seem like it is too bad if it doesn't have much to reach your expectations. But when you go to watch a movie that is a "high dollar" film, then you expect a certain kind of quality. Now, if you are already a fan of a certain title or series, than you may expect a certain something from that series. So, when it dissapoints, you have a long way to fall, so it makes the damage worse.
Now, if you don't go into this movie expecting too much, i could say it may be a good time. Just don't go into it thinking that you are going to watch a movie worth watching, and I'm sure you will end up thinking, this wasn't a complete waste of time.
As far as FF movies go, i think they should make a movie for Final Fantasy 7. I would hope they could come up with an idea that is original enough to just have a brand new movie, but since they probably won't, the game of FF 7 is so awesome, it would be mighty hard for them to make a crappy movie. Not that they didn't poop it up also already. I don't want to see a sequal of FF 7... that movie sucked... i want to see the movie for FF7!
