Personal fitness 2009: Trends, equipment, new directions

It's 2009, new slate and new exercise trends are here with equipment to boot.

Where do you go to get your info about what will make you slim and trim? Perhaps, you will check out the local Y or go to Consumer Reports or surfing the Internet for trends that best serves your needs; before you take the plunge into your new routine.

But what is the new trend going to be this year? Do I really need a personal trainer to get the job done? Some people find a new trainer to help them with the new trend. But with the economy as it is, who needs a trainer when all you need is space in your home for the workout.

If money isn't a problem I say get the trainer, and start working out.

Oprah has her own trainer, and I am sure that others do as well. A personal trainer can look after your best interest. First of all, they usually give you a fitness test to see your high points, and low points. They will give you ideas what machines you need to workout on from weight machines to cardio machines such as bikes, elliptical, or treadmills. From the results, the trainer will chart out your goals, and list out the machines that would serve you best. Then you are on your own.

Memberships could be something you can't afford right now, but you see the expense of having your own machines in your home worth the cost. But if you are going to buy the machine look for equipment that will do the best for your body. If you are looking for a good workout with less stress on your bones get an elliptical. They are still very much around, and offer backward and forward motion. I just purchased one that not only offers that but helps with my arms, and it also gives me a chance to plug in a mp3 player to listen to music, or whatever.

Treadmills are still out there, and will continue to be there. Is easy for people who can't get out and want to take a walk. I say buy something that will be around and won't be a fad.

The show the "Biggest Loser" has been one of the latest trends for people to watch. Perhaps, while watching the show we can get ideas from that comes the Boot Camp idea. I guess the military
