On the morning of August 6th1945 the Japanese civilians experienced like the soldiers that, "War is hell." On that morning in Japan three American B-29's flew over Japan and one of them made history. It dropped the first nuclear bomb in history on the city of Hiroshima. President Truman was only president for 116 days on the day the bomb was dropped and didn't even know of the bombs existence until he became president. Some people think this was a morally wrong decision but I think Truman made the right decision and saved many lives by dropping the bomb. Japan had a unique view about fighting dieing for there country in battle, they would have literally fought to the last man. Japan also brutally mistreated prisoners in the Philippines. And lastly Japanese civilians would have died anyway.
Japan had a policy during the battle that the most honorable death was to die in battle for your country. When the United States started to fight the Japanese on Islands in the pacific they experienced some of the most intense battles of the war. The Japanese refused to retreat, and would fight to the last man standing. On Iwo Jima the Marines experienced the will of the Japanese to fight on. Iwo Jima is 8 square miles and the Marines had to push out about 21,000 Japanese, who turned the Island into one huge Bunker. The Island had a massive tunnels system that the Japanese used to hide from American bombing, and to move troops secretly and safely. At the end of the Battle for Iwo Jima only 200 Japanese survived out of the 21,000 who defended it. These number show how determined the Japanese were, and they would not easily surrender. Also on Guada Canal Chesty Puller and his Marines reported finding Japanese chained to there bunkers so they would not retreat (Davis). So even if the Japanese were scared out of there minds some of them were forced to fight to the death. Japanese civilians also would have defended there country to the death if we invaded. So America needed to inflict terror and fear into the country of Japan, and this was achieved by the two Atomic Bombs. If we did not drop the bombs we would have had to invade the island of Japan, just like we did the beaches of Normandy. If this operation happened many more American and Japanese lives would have been lost. Dropping the Atom bombs were much less casualties then doing another Normandy like invasion on Japan.
Some people say dropping the bombs wasn't morally correct even if it did save lives. America did warn Japan
