All heroes in books complete the same stages of the hero's journey. Even though they travel through the same stages they all develop differently because they have different experiences at each stage. In the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight translated by Boroff and the tale of Sir Gareth from Malory's Le Mort de Arthur they both complete the hero's journey but each experience the departure, trial, and return differently.
Sir Gareth and Sir Gawain are both called to an adventure and depart their cstles.. In Sir Gawain and the green knight the green knight comes and brings a challenge to the Knights of the Round Table. He asks if someone is brave enough to cut off his head and then in a year the Green Knight will cut off the head of the knight who cuts his. Then the Green Knight mocks King Arthurs knights for not stepping up to the challenge. King Arthur then gets frustrated that none of his knights stand up to the tasks so he himself volunteers but Sir Gawain says, "I beseech before all here, that this melee may be mine" (Boroff 115). Gawain at first was reluctant to take the quest but did accept the quest in front of all the Knights of the Round Table. Sir Garths departure starts with a lady who comes to king Arthur and asks for a knight to rescue her sister. King Arthur says he can only send a knight to help if she tells them her sisters name and where she lives. But the lady refuses and says, " Alas! I thought you would not fail me; so now I must resume my search" (Malory 139). The lady came all the way to King Arthur's court to find a knight to help her and king Arthur refuses her one because she wont tell them her sisters name or where she lives. But right before she is dismissed Sir Gareth who is only known as Beaumains asks for two wishes, "The first is that I pursue the quest besought by this lady and when I have proved myself worthy [have Lancelot] make me a knight(Malory 140). Unlike Sir Gawain when no one wanted the quest, King Arthur in "Sir Gareth" will only let one of his knights go unless the lady tells the name of her sister. But since Sir Gareth isn't knighted yet and they don't know who he really is, he asks to go on the quest and is granted it. Both knights have now begun there adventures and will be put to tests.
In the journeys of Sir Gawain and Sir Gareth the experience tests of strength and endurance.. Sir Gawain on his way to the Green Chapel where the Green knight is to behead him, stops at a castle near the Green Chapel to spend
