How to prevent ear mites in cats

Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are very small parasites that are the most common cause of inflammations of the outer ear in cats. These parasites are highly contagious between cats and can be spread from cats to other animals including dogs. Ear mites can be found on the skin inside the ear canal and will feed on tissue, fluids and skin found in the ear.

Younger cats and kittens are more susceptible to getting outer-ear inflammations from ear mites which could be due to the fact that older cats have built up an immunity to ear mites. These parasites can cause itching which can lead to a cat tearing the ear. Ear mites can be difficult to treat, persistence and dedication to your pet will be needed to rid them from your cat.

SYMPTOMS

There are several signs that are visible when a cat has ear mites. Constant scratching of the ears and head shaking are common symptoms. Ears that appear dirty or have a heavy build-up of wax can also be signs of these parasites. The ears may also have a distinct odor caused from an infestation.

TREATMENTS

Veterina rian treatment is required for ear mites in cats. After a diagnosis has been confirmed, the veterinarian should clean the ears thoroughly which will remove some of the parasites. A medicine will be prescribed for the cat that will kill the mites and reduce swelling inside the ear.

Ear mites are not always confined to the ears and can sometimes be found living on the cat's body. These mites can be successfully treated with flea remedies such as shampoos. It is important to follow through on using the medication as prescribed and for the length of time prescribed. Make a follow-up visit to the veterinarian to confirm the problem has been fully treated.

PREVENTION

The best prevention against ear mites is keeping a cat's ears clean. Dry the ears thoroughly after bathing and clean the ears of any dirt regularly. Wash your pet's bedding frequently and seek veterinarian care at the first signs of a problem.

Because some cats will not show any signs of having ear mites, it is important to treat all cats in a household so they cannot be spread back to a cat that has been treated. Veterinarians also recommend having all dogs treated as they can also transmit the parasites back to cats. Cats that are allowed to roam outdoors are more susceptible to ear mites and may need their ears cleaned more often. Ear mites are not always preventable. If pet owner's suspect their cat has ear mites, early intervention is important for the overall well-being of the cat.
