Not to offend anyone; we all have our opinions, for different reasons. I chose the category of convenience as I do believe someone with an older large kitchen, but not too much counter space; an island can often be a necessity. But in the overall scheme of things, I believe the island falls in the slot where the open' concept room has.
It's funny how when we start seeing islands on the home shows on television, or perhaps in those shiny home magazines; we all need it, as soon as possible. "How can we operate an efficient kitchen, without an island?" It's like all of a sudden we have the idea that our once perfect kitchen is old and outdated, without the infamous island.
Such as the kitchen being opened to the family, dining, or outside dining space, "how did we survive before?" It's true that when you don't have that open concept, you may miss out on what's going on in the other rooms, but that too, is a symptom of a home needing a remodel? But before you start knocking down walls or starting a kitchen remodel; be truthful, to yourself.. "Why is it that you feel you are in need of this change?" Do you have valid reasons for the update or could it be one of those necessities' you just might to want to rethink.
It seems we aren't simply speaking of just an island anymore; they have become so large, with enough room that the kitchen table has become obsolete. Islands can seat four to six, or more for a quick meal. The islands are from the small rolling ones with a cutting board, to ones that are equipped with a sink, small refrigerator, wine storage, and more.
I believe that island worshipping has gotten out of hand. Look at your kitchen; is there room for an island, without cutting your kitchen into a tight squeeze? Do you have a large kitchen, but hardly any counter space?
Are there duel chefs who do that dance around one another, who prepare those complicated and delicious dishes? Do you create your magic for dinner parties as a regular treat for your friends? You just might need the island.
If you are in need of an island, because all of your friends have one; you may just want to put that money into another project. Fads and hot as of now' trends, change as we all know. What is so sheik today just may be that eye sore of tomorrow. Someday you may hear yourself saying, that you don't know what you were thinking, with bringing in the island.
