How to create wealth working from home

by Doreen Martel

If you are one of the millions of people who was laid off from their job during the recession, you might be wondering if it is possible for you to create wealth by working at home. As a victim of a layoff you should know that with time, persistence and a positive outlook it is possible to get your financial security

Establish your credentials

To begin your path of creating wealth working at home,  the first step is going to be to take an inventory of your skills. You will also need to have a general awareness of your weaknesses. In order to establish yourself as a serious work at home person you will need to make a full assessment of where you fit into the work at home marketplace.

Sit down in a quiet area of your home and take a sheet of paper and draw a line right down the middle of it (the long way) and on one side list all of your "positive" skills and all of your 'negative' skills. As an example:

• Positive skills

Good time management

Early riser

• Negatives to be aware of

Like to sleep late

Often spend too much time on emails

And continue from there. Once you have completed your skills list it is time to move on to the second phase of preparing to create wealth working from home.

Developing a work at home resume

Do not be fooled into thinking that a standard resume is going to work as well for you in a virtual environment as it did in the brick and mortar environment you just left. Your new resume must be strong enough to convey your message to someone you may never meet since you will be working at home.

One prime example of something that should change is the heading we typically mark "goals". Instead, you want to provide an overview to potential clients. This overview should present your case to the potential client of why you're the right person to meet the needs of their job.

Finding Clients

Surprise! You do not have the same base of potential jobs that you had as a "brick and mortar employee"! In order to create wealth from home you need to establish a client base that trusts you with their work. This is not always easy but, there are hundreds of websites that offer you the ability to showcase your talents and many of them charge low or no fees to do so. Some of the free sites that are commonly used are LinkedIn (where you can register for a free account, list your skills and connect with others) and oDesk (where you can register as a provider, set up a profile, take free skill tests and bid on jobs).

Your portfolio

Chances are if you are brand new to working at home you do not have a portfolio and you are wondering how to overcome that problem. Actually it is not all that difficult. If you are seeking work as a graphic artist for example, create samples of work to include in a portfolio. If you are seeking work as a writer create a portfolio of writing samples.

Getting your portfolio recognized

Now that you've started creating your portfolio you might be wondering how you're going to make it available to clients. Regardless of the type of work you're applying for a website with low cost (such as Doteasy) or a service such as oDesk can help. Other options include a blog portfolio which can be created easily (and free) at sites such as Word Press or Blogger.

Other Options

Perhaps you're too impatient to wait for all of this to work. Have no fear there are certainly other options that are available to you to begin laying a foundation for creating wealth working at home. Here are a few:

• Write articles for Helium regularly (this also adds to your portfolio)

• Join your local freecycle list and pick up items that others no longer want and sell them on eBay

• Take online surveys that offer pay

• Join all the affiliates you can find and begin your own affiliate marketing program

• Sign up for Hub Pages and Squidoo and create free pages where you can earn money from your affiliate links

* Clean out your attic, your garage and your closet and put the items up for sale on eBay

These are a few options for you to begin to create wealth working from home. You can get started simply and work your way up through proper and aggressive networking. Working from home is never going to be an easy way out. You will have to invest a significant amount of time if your goal is to create wealth working from home.
