When I was a child, I always dreamed of meeting Prince Charming; and being completely swept off my feet. I use to watch all the old Hollywood movies and dream of Cary Grant, Erol Flyn, or someone like that, would come and sweep me away. The Golden Age of Hollywood really had an impact on the way I thought of love. I didn't get Erol Flyn, of course, but I got a wonderful husband. He is not only my husband, but he is my best friend. He is nothing that I dreamt of; but a lot more. Destiny has a funny way of crossing two unsuspecting people's paths.
I was 20 years old, I worked in a music store in our mall. I loved working there because I met a lot of new people; and I was exposed to all kinds of music. I use to see this teenage kid sitting outside the store, on the weekends. He was nice looking: tall, athletic. But in my mind, he was just another teenage kid hanging out in the mall. He would sit and watch people or talk to friends. Every now and then, he would come into the store and buy something. He was always respectful and nice.
Fast forward a few years...I had two little boys. I was working in a convenient store. I was sick and wasn't suppose to be at work. Well guess who walks in? He had his god-daughter with him, buying her candy. He was so sweet with her. She would say, "Uncle E, I want this one." And he would get her a handful of whatever she wanted. By the time they made it to the register, he had a ton of candy.
I wasn't the nicest person to him though. Like I said I was sick, wasn't suppose to be working, and just wasn't in the greatest of moods. I had a line of customers and a guy had just yelled at me for not turning on the gas pump. I rang up all the candy and he asked if I was feeling bad. I told him yeah (like it was none of his business). He just smiled and told me to have a good night and get some rest. I was like "whatever".
A few months later, I had went out with some friends. It was early and we were just hanging out talking. Well guess who walks in? You guessed it. He was talking to a mutual friend of mine and that is when I really noticed him. He had a twinkle in his eyes as he laughed. I got that little butterfly in my stomach and a little self conscious. I told one of my friends I though he was really nice looking, she laughs and tells me she'll tell our other friend to introduce us. I panicked! There was no way this guy was going to even give me a second glance.
After the introductions, we have been inseparable since. It has been almost twelve years since the day we were formally introduced. And what I found was a guy who would give you his left arm if you needed it. He is someone who genuinely cares for others. He's funny, open-minded, and just plain down to earth. I couldn't imagine life without him. And sure we have our differences every now and then, but he still means the world to me. And I would do anything to protect him.
I told him I had two very small boys, and he didn't cringe like most men would. He has been "DAD" since almost day one. He helped when they were sick. He was there to help me potty train them both. He was there when they needed help with school work. He was there when they needed a man to guide them. And he still is. He is the most wonderful man on the planet and he is the joy of my life.
