saddle gradually. You might also find yourself puffing and panting a bit going up hills; don't worry, your cardio vascular system will get used to it pretty quickly and your fitness will improve dramatically, so keep at it.
Most of all, make sure you enjoy your cycling. If you're the type of person that relishes the challenge of a big hill climb, great, go for it. But if you're not, don't worry, find some more gentle routes, get out there and have some fun.
Cycling is also a great social and family activity, so involve other people. If you take up cycling to get fit, set yourselves some challenges and spur each other on to achieve them. If you're more of a leisure cyclist, pack a picnic, load up your bike and take your family and friends to a quiet spot for lunch al fresco. Cycling to work? Great, encourage your co-workers to do the same so you can all enjoy the benefits of cycling.
I love cycling. It's a few years now since that first-ride-since-childhood, and I've never looked back. I've upgraded my bike a couple of times and got some cycle specific clothing and accessories to make my riding more comfortable and enjoyable; I'm fitter, healthier and enjoy more time outdoors with friends.
So don't hesitate. How to get started with cycling? Just get on a bike and do it!
