Music is losing its 'depth'

by David Marsh

Created on: January 07, 2009

Music can speak to people in different ways and people also look to music for different things. There are some people who just like a nice tune, something they can dance to or a song that has a good beat to it. Other people will listen to a song if it has a deep rooted moral or meaning in its lyrics. I myself like to listen to songs which have some depth to them but it is not essential for a song. Many songs have been successful because they are catchy and make people want to listen to their songs or have something in their lyrics that people can relate to.

It was not until recently that I found out that many of the songs that I love seem to lack depth. I only reached this conclusion as I a student of English and for a piece of coursework I decided to turn a song I liked into a story. One of the main problems that I came up against was that all the songs I wanted to right about seemed to lack enough depth to be turned into a proper story. It seemed impossible to make an entire story on the songs I like so I had to write my story based on a few songs instead.

Now, you may think that this is proof, that music today is in fact losing the depth it once had but I do not think that is the case. Music today is a lot more varied then it once was. Depending on the genre of the music there will be different levels of depth to the songs. I think that there has been a great amount of lose of depth in rap music then there used to be as much of it seems to be about the same things rather then focusing on some deep meaning that the singer wants to get across to their audience they merely seem to try to put their own spin on the same message that has been going through rap music for a long time without any really idea of depth or passion.

There are still a lot of music around that has a lot of depth to their songs but these tend to be in songs which are slower rather then fast and catchy. One of my own personal favourite songs is,"Hurt," by Johnny Cash. I believe that this song, above all the others I like has a lot of depth to it despite the fact that it was written by someone else I think that Cash's version speaks a lot about decisions in life and the choices that he himself has made. This now makes me question if a song actually needs to be written by the person who actually sings the song or weather it can have depth because of the amount of feeling and passion that the singer puts in to the song.
