Decorating a child's bedroom on a budget

When it comes to decorating a child's room, sometimes furnishings and the many extras that go with a desired result can be costly. But if you know where to look and are a little bit savvy with crafts, you can decorate a child's room at minimal cost yet create a stylish haven your kids will love to reside in.

Following are some tips on how you can decorate a child's room on a budget and achieve the desired result at minimal cost.

CHEAP AND QUICK WAYS TO GIVE A ROOM A FACELIFT

There are many cheap ways you can change the look of a room if you're on a budget.

1) Paint: A 4lt paint tin is all you will need to give a room a fresh and new look. Visit your local hardware store and purchase the cheapest paint they have and have your child choose the color they desire. Give them tips on choosing the color by using a feature within their room, for example bed linen or the color of a rug or curtains.

2) Stenciling: Visit your local craft store or locate a design online that your child would like. This could be a flower motif or butterflies, cars or even simple stars. Purchase a small tin of paint in a contrasting color to the paint on the walls and stencil the design around the room. The stencil need not be around the ceiling, but you can also place it around a child's bed head, around the middle of the walls or around the window frames.

3) Wall stickers: Wall stickers are no longer simple designs that can ruin a dcor but the better made variety add flare and creativity to any wall with minimal hassle and cost. EBay has a great variety of removable wall stickers that come in hundreds of designs, choosing which one will be the difficult part.

4) Cheap Window furnishings: Curtains and blinds need not be an expensive venture. Visit your local craft or discount haberdashery store and see how cheap yet effective the custom made varieties are. Purchase simple tab-top curtains and add embellishments with ribbons or beads to add creativity and flare to dull curtains.

CHEAP FURNITURE

There are so many ways to get cheap furniture that once you begin you'll find it can easily become an addiction. Following are some ways to locate cheap furniture for a child's room, new and second-hand.

~Bric-a brac shops: Visit local second hand shops such as St Vincent's to purchase unwanted furniture people have thrown away.

~Garage sales: Open your local paper to discover garage sales that may be on in the area. Some items may only need a fresh coat of paint or a minor repair to restore them to greatness.
