Handcrafted ideas for decorating children's rooms

by R.L Hanlon

Decorating a child's room can be satisfying for parents, especially if you've handcrafted many of the items. Handcrafted items will become memorable treasures for you and your children, and also make great gifts for anyone who is having a baby.

Following are some different craft ideas that may be incorporated into the design and decorating scheme of a child's bedroom, from baby to teenager. You'll be sure to find an inspiring idea that will save you money, give the opportunity for you and your children to spend some quality time together and give a gift that keeps on giving.

CREATIVE STENCILLING

Use stencils of letters or pictures to create a gorgeous painted border or inspirational words or names upon the wall of a child's room. Use a differing shade of color than that of the wall color, for example white lettering on a pink wall color that your child may read each day.

For plain wooden floors, create a stenciled design on the floor using paint.

CREATIVE FABRICS

Using chiffon or organza fabric, get crafty by creating an original and effective look by hanging them as curtains. These can be decorated with ribbons, beads, miniature dolls or any such item to add creative flare.

Create bed curtains from fabrics, puppet theatres or use pins to tack sheer fabrics to the ceiling for a gorgeous affect in any room.

HANDMADE QUILT

For the crafter who likes to quilt use remnants of old fabric or your children's old clothes to create an original and treasured quilt for your child's bed. Photo shops now have the ability to transfer treasured photos onto fabric so these can be incorporated into the design too.

HOMEMADE CUSHIONS AND PILLOWS

Using old or scrap quilting fabric or printed designs to create cushions that may be used on chairs, the bed or to have on the floor as pillow seats when other kids come over and stay.

Using simple sewing techniques, stitch a pillow together and add creative flare by including silk ribbon embroidery designs.

CROSS STITCH AND EMBROIDERY

Visit an online store such as eBay or your local craft store to purchase a cross-stitch kit. Baby's designs can include teddy bears and toys, to personalized cross-stitch gifts announcing birth dates or special poems.

Children love crafts and this is a simple way to get them interested in them. The finished design may be framed and hung proudly upon the bedroom wall.

HAND MADE LAMPS

Purchase a lamp base and frame from your craft store and get creative with fabrics and beads. Bead tassels onto the lamp frame or embroider designs onto the lampshade. A great idea for kid's rooms is to cut out original designs such as stars or hearts and these shapes will appear on the walls and ceiling when the lamp is lit.

KIDS ART WORK

Have your children's favorite artwork framed and displayed on the wall in their room.

DOLLS AND BEARS

Instead of purchasing a doll or teddy bear, have you every tried to create one? Craft supplies for creating dolls and bears are available at many craft stores. Create some clothes for your child's doll or bear so they can change it's clothes often.

BEDHEAD NIGHTLIGHT

For crafters who know a little about using tools and woodwork, create a motif design in a bed head and have an electrician install a light fixture to the base. The cut out shapes will light up when the bed head is lit up.

FLARE WITH BEADS

Many designs can be created from beads. For older children where beads are not a choking hazard, create curtain tie backs, beaded tassels to hang from door knobs and even beaded curtains, stools, ceiling dangles or anything that you think may look effective within the dcor of the room.

For the teen that may have a corkboard in their room, use large sewing pins to bead unique glass beads onto the end for an original look to a corkboard.

Beaded curtains are also a great addition to any room and can be created simply from nylon cord, a piece of doweling rod and different beads. Hang from a cupboard or doorway for a great curtain.

WOODEN LETTERS AND WORDS

Purchase or make wooden letters that spell your children's names or inspirational words. Decorate with paint, beads and glitter and tack onto the wall. These look great on the wall and your children will have great fun creating them.

CREATIVE SHELVING AND CURTAIN RODS

Use some items your kids love to play with or old toys that may be about to be thrown out to create unique shelves. One example is using old skateboards or the base of a scooter and having it attached to the wall.

Inspirational ideas for curtain rods may include an old fishing rod or a boat oar used instead of the traditional curtain rod.

CREATIVE COLLAGES

A collage of your teens favorite rock group or actor created from pictures from magazines is great wall art to have their rooms. Have the end result laminated or framed and then hung upon their wall.

Decorating your child's room with handmade crafts can be extremely rewarding. Not only will it save you money but it will also create lasting memories for your children and give them a room full of unique and beautiful things.
