Poetry: Courage

by Donna Kroll

The Feather

I carry a seagull feather
In my notebook wherever I go
I use it as my inspiration
For courage, when I need it to show

One day, on the beach, I was walking
When this white feather caught my eye
Coming to rest, right in front of my feet
Drifting slowly down from the sky

I looked to see where it came from
And I saw a bird of the sea
Soaring with beauty, with fire and grace
As it landed in front of me

I gazed at it in wonder
For it had only one leg, you see
Which could have stopped it from living
Yet, it still soared above the sea

It used it's strength for flying
Not just to live, but to thrive
And soared the sky, with hope and with joy
Not just to live, but to be alive!

I picked up it's beautiful feather
And vowed to use it to say
To myself, to have the courage
To live in that brave seagull's way.

For you see, I am one of those people
That's timid and so full of fear
Even though I'm bright and have many ideas
That I'd like other people to hear

So, I look at this wonderful feather
When I have got something to say
For the courage to try, to talk, and to write
To convey things in my own way
