It doesn't matter what type of hair you have, winter months will always take their toll if you are not careful. If you have curly or wavy hair you are probably in for a worse ride than those with straight hair. Never the less, if you follow the tips in this article you should be able to rescue your hair and prevent any further damage.
Winter brings cold weather, snow, windy conditions, and more. For your hair this can be a nightmare and the damage that comes with it cannot be repaired. Below are some tips to help maintain your hairs appearance even in the coldest of weather.
1. If you are going out in the cold and wind it is a good idea to tie your hair up in a plait. This will help to prevent knots and dry ends. If this is not an option try to keep your hair covered and safe by wearing a hat.
2. Try to use a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup from your hair. Styling products leave residue and this residue will stop your conditioner from doing its job properly.
3. Use a weekly treatment to help nourish and protect your hair. Cold weather drains the moisture from your hair so it is important to look for treatments that will rehydrate, replenish and renew your hairs natural beauty. Once a month you can also splash out and treat your hair to a mask or reconstructor. A good brand to try is Nioxin's Deep Repair Hair Masque which will leave your hair looking and feeling amazing.
4. Glossing serum is great during the winter months when hair becomes dull and limp. A little goes a long way and can make your hair look and feel great.
5. Whenever possible, let hair dry naturally as long as possible. Hot styling tools like blow dryers and curling irons damage the hair shaft and create split ends; cold weather only accelerates this.
6. Reduce the temperature when rinsing out conditioner as this will help prevent too much moisture loss from your hair. You don't have to use freezing cold water; warm tepid water will do the trick and will help to reseal your cuticle after washing your hair. This also helps to leave your hair smooth and shiny.
7. Cut down on your hair straightener usage and allow you hair to dry naturally. How often do you use a hair straightener? If you're like me, it's probably on a daily basis but in winter I do try to cut down because like everything, moderation is the key. Straighteners can cause spilt ends and these cannot be repaired. If you notice this happening to your hair, then it's time to take a break and do some damage control. Get a good conditioning treatment and try not to use your straightener unless you really need it.
Last but not least, invest in a good leave in conditioning spray and use it wisely during the winter months. It will help to prevent any further damage and when the summer comes around you will definitely be thankful when you hair is beautiful and glossy.
