MICHAEL JACKSON
Michael Joseph Jackson, born August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, was a recording artist, songwriter, and businessman. Jackson, the King of Pop, was the seventh child born to Joseph Joe Jackson and Katherine Esther Jackson; they produced nine children. They all originate from Gary, Indiana and are famous in their own right, but Janet Jackson (the youngest) is the most famous after Michael.
The King of Pop started his career with his four brothers, forming The Jackson Five (Tito, Marlon, Jackie, Jermaine, and Michael). Jackson was successful with his brothers, but he was much more successful and profitable as a solo artist. He has a total of ten albums: Got To Be There (1972), Ben (1972), Music & Me (1973), Forever, Michael (1975), Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), HIStory (1995), and Invincible (2001).
Jackson's first four albums released on Motown Records were satisfactory and rendered a few hits - but nothing major. Released under Epic Records in 1979, his fifth album, Off the Wall, was a different story and garnered many awards. Not only was the album a hit, but it made Jackson a worldwide icon. To date, the album has sold more than 7 million records in the U.S. and more than 20 million records worldwide. In 2008, Off the Wall, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Jackson's biggest selling album, however, is none other than his 1982 release THRILLER. The album has a total of nine songs; seven were released as singles and they all reached the top 10 on the Billboard 100. This album cemented Jackson as a musical genius and was a chart-topper worldwide. At the 1984 Grammys, the album won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards.
