How great were the 1990's?

by Donna Reynolds

Created on: January 06, 2009

The 90s: It was a time when mysteries went unsolved and made you afraid to walk out your front door, America was suddenly funny in a sometimes unfunny way, there was a bar where you could go and everyone would know your name, dad's were more accident prone than children, all problems could be solved with a hug and a pep talk, and there was royalty living in Bel Air. And that was just television. A box was also invented that could transport young children into a world where they were invincible and the graphics of said box were an astronomical sixteen bits! Yes, I'm talking about Nintendo. From the movies we learned how to set traps for burglars if ever we were left home accidentally by our forgetful parents. We learned that ghosts were everywhere and you could either call someone to help you or you could do pottery with them. Let's not forget that there were giant turtles who knew martial arts, ordered Domino's pizza, and lived in the sewers. Am I starting to sound like a Time Life commercial yet?

In the early 90s the economy was being overseen by George Bush, and no I don't mean been George 'Dubya' Bush. You know those stamps, oh those would be the little stickers you put on envelopes when you send letters which is what we sent back then because e-mail, remarkably, was not around. Anyway, the stamps were a mere quarter to buy. That's right. We didn't have to dig out two quarters and wait for change. Oh how lucky we were. And do you know how much we paid for gas? Would you believe it was only $1.16 at the start of the 90s? Unbelievable, I know. And you know that milk that costs you nearly five dollars to purchase at the store? Can you remember when we only paid two dollars? That was the 90s. If only we could turn back time. By the end of the 90s we had elected a new president, the one who would later swear that he did not have sexual relations with some woman. You know the one. With Bill Clinton in charge we saw, and I'm not saying he was at fault for the price change, the milk go from two dollars to three and the stamp go from a quarter to thirty-three cents. And still life was easier.

Music was easier to understand back then and the lyrics were harder to learn. A young brunette from the Mickey Mouse Club broke out onto the scene with a fresh innocent face and a voice that made every guy want her and every girl want to be her. This was before she dated a member of a sensational boy band or had children with a washed out rapper. It was long before she went crazy
