Downloadable game review: BrainPipe

The game Brainpipe is like a colorful, 3D collection of tie-dye t-shirts, the 70's, blobs, and the Atari. The graphical, forward moving tunnels give you the feel that you are actually traveling right through time, or perhaps on a ship traveling in space. The colors and graphical blobs whiz by you so fast at times that you actually feel as if you are really traveling through a tunnel in some other place and time.

As you increase in the level you will start to appear to be moving forward even faster. At first this is relaxing in a way, but the colors start flying by so fast they can actually make you dizzy. This does add to the difficulty in completing the level as the colorful blobs whiz by so fast you are unable to concentrate on where your tunnel is going or when it is turning. Fortunately, the game does offer keyboard shortcuts that allow you to slow down your tunnel travels by using the 'brakes'.

As you travel through the tunnels, portrayed to be the tunnels of your mind, your objective is to collect 'glyphs', while avoiding obstacles at the same time. In order to reach that levels achievement you must be able to collect these glyphs, while avoiding impact with all other obstacles.

At a certain point after hitting too many obstacles, your impacts will show a red glow. Once this glow becomes a dull red you only have one more impact until your game is over, and you essentially did not complete the level.

The sound quality is clear, while the sounds themselves are repetitive and have a way of making you feel nervous. The sound interacts with the sights coming toward you, making them an important part of the game play.

Although the game is creative in an unusual way, and colorful, it appears to be nothing short of a modern day Atari game. Brainpipe requires excellent hand eye coordination. After playing for a short period you will find these skills improving dramatically.

The point and click interface is self explanatory and very easy to use. The icons for level play are graphical representations of eyeballs, and very high quality ones.

Given the colorful blobs, and the feel of traveling through tunnels, children will find Brainpipe entertaining. The game will, however, leave much to be desired for the adult gamer.

There are ten levels of play that seem near impossible to complete. The graphics are clear and sharp, but they are not easy on the eyes in combination with the forward moving effect. Yet, the creativity of bringing back an idea from the 70's does deserve some recognition. Overall, Brainpipe receives a rating of 2.5/5.
