How to prevent insomnia in seniors

by Beatrice Okorie

If you want to prevent insomnia in your senior years, planning begins in the younger years of your life cycle. The proper age for planning should be in your mid thirties. Everyone must plan how they want to age. Many questions must be answered about your health, diet, hobbies, relationships, and living conditions.

Think about what type of person you are. Are you active? Do you like staying home and watching television all day? Do you spend your pension check at the casinos? Do you like a lot of people around you all the time? Do you want to be alone? Do you have family? Are you mobile? Do you worry a lot? These are some of the questions only you can answer as a senior.

If you are an active person with plans for everyday of the week, you should not have any problems with sleeping. People who are usually active when they are older were active when they were younger. If you are not an active person, then you need to find the reason why and begin an action plan.

The senior years can be some of the most rewarding years of ones life. So never get depress because you are getting older. Do not lose sleep at night because you think you are worthless. Think of your talents. Can you draw? Can you Write? Can you make things out of other things? Go to the senior centers and speak with other seniors.

Insomnia is about doing nothing. When you keep yourself busy, sleep comes naturally. It sounds simple and it is.

Another thing that can bring on insomnia is too much food and the types of foods being consumed. Too much consumption of meats can cause nightmares and an interruption in the sleep pattern. Eat seven teaspoons of a vegetable cassarole dish with half a glass of prune juice for a dinner snack. For breakfast, have dice fruit. You can skip lunch. Just have a sandwich and a full glass of water if you need to eat lunch.

Noise is another cause of insomnia. If you live downstairs and someone above you have parties, then it might be time to move. It also could be your next door neighbor's barking dog that is keeping you awake. Weather is another factor that contributes to insomnia. Is it too hot or too cold in your home or apartment?

When you become a senior you really do not need much. If you have a medical condition that prevents you from sleeping peacefully, maybe it will take an unusual solution. Lower your bed, instead of sleeping at the head of the bed, sleep at the foot of the bed. Put your earplugs in and listen to rock music. In other words, do the opposite of what you normally do.
