Tips for efficient leadership

by Doreen Martel

Efficient leadership is created by a leader who helps others feel important and emphasizes their strengths. In addition, an efficient leader helps acknowledge the contributions of a group and keeps the attention focused away from them.

Efficient leaders help promote a vision that allows those who are working with them to understand completely what is expected of them. Setting up expectations allows team members to fully anticipate what they need to do to reach a common goal.
Efficient leaders follow the golden rule at all times, treating everyone involved in a project the way they would want to be treated.  It does not do any good for a leader to treat their team members badly.

One of the primary traits that is necessary for efficient leadership is a leader who is willing to admit that they have made a mistake. It does no good to cover up errors, admitting them openly allows the entire team to head in the right direction with confidence and with renewed trust.

A critical leadership trait that many overlook is when it is necessary to be critical of a member of the team. This should never be done in front of other people. This demoralizes the entire team; criticisms should always be done in private.

Leadership by example is efficient leadership.  Leaders who are highly visible, communicative and available are highly sought after. This does not mean that the leader should micro-manage, they are there to provide guidance only.

A great leadership tip that is often overlooked comes in rewarding and encouraging team members. Not only should leaders provide competition (friendly competition) among team members, but they should help in goal setting, they should actively publicize and celebrate team (and individual successes).

Some of the most famous leaders have succeeded where others have failed because of their unique leadership styles.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?: Martin Luthur King Jr.

"Outstanding leaders go out of the way to boost the self esteem of others. If people believe in themselves, it's amazing what they can accomplish." - Sam Walton

Let leaders' lead, and take responsibility. Inability to delegate is the number one cause of failure! Reinforce your goals, don't intimidate, promote the big picture. Share a vision, share activities, share decision making and above all, lead by example! Remember, the more credit you give away, the more that will come back to you.  Everyone will develop their own leadership style, but those who make the most of efficient styles of leadership will lead their teams to bigger and better things.
