I have always considered myself to be the classic "armchair traveler". I simply cannot read enough. I have learned much from books and I will read just about anything. I have told others that I will even read stereo instructions. I have often wished that many of the fantastic novels I have enjoyed could be adapted for the screen.
Here is only a small sample of the books that I would make into movies if I were ever given the opportunity to do so. There are so many of them that it would be impossible to list them all here. (This article would span over one hundred pages at the very least.)
1. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
I loved this book so much that even though it is a children's book, I still read it. It is a magnificent fantasy novel of a search throughout the Universe for a missing father.
2. The Lovely Bones by Anne Sebold
This novel haunted me for months. It was so sad and so beautifully written that I couldn't get it out of my head. I have always wondered how the movie would be and whether or not the subtle but raw emotion of the book could be captured. A fourteen year old girl is raped and murdered by a neighbor and she tries so hard to help her grieving family locate her body. Although this is a very sensitive topic, tragedies such as this happen daily all over the world.
3. The Balgariad, part I and II by David Eddings
These books would make an unbelievably stunning fantasy epic. It is the tale of a seemingly ordinary boy who embarks upon a quest to locate a missing orb to restore a long-dead kingdom. Sorcery, adventure, and humor can be found on every page. To say that both novels are serious page-turners would be an understatement. The movies would be a feast for the eyes.
4. Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom
After Eddie, the main character, dies, he is met in Heaven by five different people. They each tell him about his life and what kind of man he was. It is a story that reminds us that every single thing we do on earth has an imapct on someone or some event and there there is no such thing as coincidence. It would make for an interesting and thought-provoking film.
5. The Key Trilogy by Nora Roberts
This would be yet another epic fantasy. Three ordinary women battling evil forces together to save three princesses in another time and place. Each book tells one woman's story. It would be impossible to combine into one movie; three movies would be a must. Also, there would have to be a prequel to tell the full story of the three princesses.
6. One for the Money by Janet Evanovich
If you are looking for some comic relief, the buck stops here. I laughed my head off throughout the whole book and, fortunately, it is the first of many. The characters are hysterical. Enter Stephanie Plum, the heroine, as the worst bounty hunter ever, her ex-prostitute sidekick, Lula, and a whole host of complete degenerates running from the law. The movie would be utterly side-splitting.
If you have not read these excellent books, I recommend that you do so. I have left as much as humanly possible out because I do not wish to spoil them. Every one of them has huge potential for the screen. All they need is the right producer and director. I always wonder which actor or actress would be chosen for which role. Many of the characters are so complex that you could not have just anyone portray them. They must be believable or the whole movie would simply crash. Read the books and I am sure you will agree.
