Your child's elementary school will no doubt have a "Meet the Teacher" day scheduled for your child a few weeks before the first day of school. By allowing your child to meet his teacher he will be familiar with what she/he looks like and have an idea of his teacher's demeanor. And she will become familiar with his. Your child will also probably get to see his classroom and his desk. This will put your child more at ease on his first day when he enters his new school.
Something very important that parents can do to prepare their child for his first day of grade school is talk to him repeatedly over the summer about what first grade will be like, what will be expected of him, what he will learn and so forth. By repeatedly talking to your child about first grade it will get him used to the idea of what his days will be like and he will have time to process the information and ask important questions.
One last thing that you might want to do before your child starts first grade, and it might be required by law depending on where you live is to get your child a physical by his pediatrician. He will be required by law to have a record showing that he has had all his inoculations but visiting with his pediatrician will ensure good health for the upcoming school year. The pediatrician can also let you know what to expect in the first year of first grade regarding your child's physical and emotional development.
A well prepared parent makes for a well prepared child and a successful child. Love and encouragement will also help your child prepare for this momentous occasion in his young life. Nothing however; will quell your tears as you watch him waving to you out the bus window as the bus driver pulls away.
