Potential parents: How parenthood changes priorities

It's possible that you are either deciding to have a baby or maybe you were just surprised by the news of the impending arrival of a new life. This new life is an extension of you. It doesn't matter who you are, most people lives change drastically when they have a baby. Your priorities will be a part of that change. You may be wondering how something so little can change your life so much. As a parent of two adult children and the grandmother of three I believe that I can give you some insight on this subject.

Parenting is a gift that we receive. It shouldn't be taken for granted. Every day from the day you know that you are pregnant will be different from anything else in your life. You will grow from a somewhat selfish person (because we all have selfishness in us) into a person who only thinks of one other being. That being is the little life that you must care for. I have seen it hundreds of times through my life and I hope that I see it a hundred more. There is nothing more spectacular than watching a mother and father grow as the years pass.

You will find yourself giving everything that is in your heart and soul to this creature. This amazingly little thing will have your emotions on a never ending roller coaster ride. You will find that sitting up at night comforting your sick child is more important to you than the sleep that you need to survive the next day. Sitting next to the crib as you watch your miracle sleeping will be of much more interest to you than that television show that you used to think was a must in your life.

Career minded people who have children suddenly find themselves willing to give up that great career to spend more time with their children. Money is a must have when you have children. That has to be in the equation. However, the amount of money that you make isn't quite as important anymore. As long as you can meet your needs and the needs of your child that will be all that matters.

You will learn along the way that parenting has to be an ever changing role. From infant to adult your child will change. You will find that those priorities will change nearly every day or so it would seem. Your first priority will always be your child. They will come first with everything. If you go to the store for something "selfish" like underwear, don't go past the baby section. This is a danger zone. Your
