What is the key to the Internet's popularity? There are two answers: the ability to socialise and the fact that you can find information on practically anything you want. Nothing equals the Internet when it comes to providing information for researching particular subjects. Even if the topic you are looking for information on is rather obscure and odd, it's a safe bet there's web pages dedicated to it somewhere. Socialising and information gathering are the two main reasons why the Internet is so great but they're not the only ones.
Below, I'll summarise the main reasons, alongside the secondary ones.
Information you seek is only a click or two away:
With the Internet, you don't need to leave home or ask anyone for information on something. If you're studying, the Internet is also a great resource to help and it might do the job equally as well as the books you're reading for your course.
The downside is that with the Internet being what it is, there's no guarantee the information you read is correct. It's the same with any user run product and that's what the Internet is when people have free reign, unless the site you're looking at is ran by professionals in the field that you're studying. So it's a good idea to look for professionally ran web sites.
Browsing the web to find information could never be easier also with the search engines that are at our disposal. Sometimes you may have to read through a page or two of results to find what you want but it's better than browsing the local library or bookstore to find what you want. Normally, what you are seeking will also be near the top of the first page you view after typing in a search phrase.
Socialising:
With the Internet, there's great ways to talk to people who you don't see very often and it can be free. Heck, the Internet is also great for meeting new people whether that's via forums, chat channels/programs like MSN Messenger or on MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games). The web is also a great way to chat to people who share the same interests as you on forums, if there's nobody close to you who likes the same hobbies. It might even lead to a friend or two you can meet up with every so often. For instance, say you enjoy biking but nobody you know does, so you hop onto a biking forum and get chatting to people. You might find that you live close to some of the people on there and decide to meet up and take your bikes for a spin.
There's also a great online service called Skype, which enables
