Poetry: Books

Overlooked

The auction is over. The people are gone.

Now there's just an empty house where there once was a home.

Wandering back through, the house looks so bare.

A strange feeling draws me to a closet upstairs.

Glancing inside I see it on the floor,

Overlooked by others, lying near the door.

Its cover is faded. Its corners are worn.

Its pages have yellowed with some slightly torn.

Between the pages there's a story to be told

as the life of its owner begins to unfold.

A bookmark, a ribbon, a small paper heart,

saved treasures from which she couldn't part.

Old photos and a letter also stored within

tell a girl's story from beginning to end.

It seems wrong to toss this book aside

so I'll give it a new place to reside.

I'll take it home to be part of my world.

I think this would please the special little girl

who hid pieces of her heart in there.

I promise to handle her treasure with care.
