The Maoist insurgency is a revolution against inequality towards members of the lower caste. The Indian caste system only serves to rally support for the revolution and unless it is stopped this revolution will severely impact economic growth that India has had the luxury to experience and will hinder India's means of fighting terrorism something that seems to currently be on the rise. The caste system should be changed and their needs to be a refocused effort toward policies which aid the lower class in their day to day challenge to survive.
In an article titled India's Materialist Middle Class Needs to Wake Up, Navtej Dhillon writes how the middle class of India "has had a hand in maintaining ineffectual leadership". It is this lack of leadership towards policies dealing with the domestic crisis in India that has lead to increased dissatisfaction among the lower classes. As has been demonstrated in other non-Western countries terrorism and unrest will flourish when stability is lacking within a States internal borders. The Maoist insurgency has the potential to be a major destabilizing factor which will only make the Indian government more ineffectual towards peace and security for the nation-state.
The benefits to responding to the Maoist insurgency in a positive light will serve two purposes. First, greater legitimacy will be achieved garnering more support of India's citizenry as a whole, not just one social class. True legitimacy can only be achieved by garnering support of the majority of a nation's population. Second, with legitimacy achieved India will have a strong base from which to fight terrorism. The dissatisfied citizens will be far less likely to be drawn towards providing support to the terrorist reign.
The Maoist insurgency and acts of terrorism will only serve to undermine any government initiatives towards stability. Without offering more opportunity for all social classes the insurgency and terrorist groups will offer an opportunity for change to those suffering under current Indian social and cultural policies. There are numerous cases of what happens when a nation does not offer opportunity to all levels of the social stratum. It creates the ideal environment for insurgency and terrorism to flourish if left unchecked.
For this to occur the Indian government needs to first establish regional counsels to determine what is most important to each region. These regional working groups will be responsible for establishing a priority of what is most important to the people to be implemented into an over arching priority list at the national level of government from which national policy can be derived. Second, the national level of government needs to focus on domestic infrastructure and institutions which address public grievances. The end result is that stability will be created leading to greater economic prosperity in the long term. A happy and prosperous lower class will provide an even greater labor force to reach full economic output. A country achieving full economic output means that the country is working at full capacity which equates to greater economic prosperity.
