Best current television series

by Donna Reynolds

Although I, admittedly, did not read all one hundred articles on this particular subject, I did skim through a number of them and was surprised at having not found my favorite show featured in anyone's article. I saw that many of you like '24' and 'The Office', two shows the likes of which I have not seen. This is not to say they are not good television shows, I don't doubt that at all. I did try to watch 'The Office' once and found it to be rather annoying, no offense to those who do like it. We are all entitled to our own opinions. I watched '24' and found it to be very intriguing but not my style. I have many sister-in-laws who would argue that 'Ghost Whisperer' is the best show on the air. I'm afraid I have to disagree with both them and the reviews I have seen thus far. The best show on television right now, in my opinion, is HBO's True Blood.

For all of you Joss Whedon fans out there this may not be the show for you. The vampires don't turn to dust when staked and their faces don't disfigure when they are 'vamping out'. There isn't a pretty little blond cheerleader running around trying to kill them all, though there is a pretty little blond lurking about. Things can get quite graphic in the show so viewers beware. In fact, when the vampires are stakes they explode and spray blood everywhere with the imagery being quite believable. And the show provides quite the treat for its male viewers, with naked breasts appearing in every episode and thorough sex scenes being a consistency.

The show, which started its run in 2007, was based on The Southern Vampire Mystery series by Charlaine Harris. If you've read the book then you will be pleasantly entertained with the first season which was based on the first book of the series, 'Dead Until Dark'. I can say with certainty, however, that not everything plays out exactly the same as the book. The cast is led by Anna Paquin who plays Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid living in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. Sookie appears to be normal on the outside but she has a special gift; she can read people's minds. The show follows her life and how her world is turned upside down the day Vampire Bill, a vampire whose age is revealed be be over one hundred years, walks into her place of employment two years after vampires 'came out of the coffin' on national television.

Merlott's. That's what her place of employment is called. It's just your every day average bar, or so it would seem. The bar is run by Sam Merlott (Sam
